What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular type of refractive eye surgery used to correct common vision issues, including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. By reshaping the cornea, LASIK allows light to properly focus on the retina, resulting in clearer vision without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

What Vision Problems Can LASIK Resolve?

LASIK effectively treats refractive errors that cause blurry vision at different distances:

– Nearsightedness (Myopia): When distant objects appear blurry while closer objects are clear.

– Farsightedness (Hyperopia): When close objects are blurry while distant objects appear clear.

– Astigmatism: When vision is distorted at all distances due to irregular curvature of the cornea.

Patients who qualify for LASIK can often experience improved vision quickly, reducing or eliminating their reliance on corrective eyewear.

What Happens During LASIK Surgery?

LASIK is a straightforward, outpatient procedure typically completed within 15-30 minutes. Here’s an outline of the process:

  1. Preparation: The eye is numbed with drops, and a device is used to keep the eye open.
  2. Creating the Flap: A thin, hinged flap is created on the cornea using a laser or blade. This flap is gently lifted to reveal the underlying corneal tissue.
  3. Reshaping the Cornea: A laser is used to reshape the corneal tissue according to the specific needs of your vision correction, helping to improve how light enters the eye.
  4. Flap Replacement: Once the cornea has been reshaped, the flap is repositioned to heal naturally, eliminating the need for stitches.

What to Expect for Recovery Time?

LASIK is known for its quick recovery. Many patients notice improved vision within 24 hours, though full recovery can take several weeks. Minor discomfort, dryness, or glare may occur initially, but these typically improve as the eyes heal. Patients are often advised to rest for a day or two following the procedure and avoid strenuous activity to aid healing.
