Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)
Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) Surgery
At North Fulton Eye Center & Cumming Eye Clinic, we offer Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK), a highly effective laser vision correction option for patients seeking clear, unaided vision. PRK is a well-established alternative to LASIK and is particularly beneficial for those with thinner corneas or who may not be ideal candidates for LASIK.
What is PRK Surgery?
PRK is a type of refractive surgery that uses a laser to reshape the cornea, correcting vision by allowing light to focus more precisely on the retina. This procedure is ideal for patients with myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. PRK can provide clear, lasting vision, reducing or even eliminating the need for glasses or contact lenses.
How Does PRK Work?
Unlike LASIK, which creates a flap in the cornea, PRK involves removing the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) to access the underlying corneal tissue. A laser is then used to reshape the corneal tissue, adjusting its curvature to correct refractive errors. After the laser treatment, a protective contact lens is placed over the cornea to aid healing as the epithelial layer regenerates naturally.
What to Expect During PRK Surgery
PRK is an outpatient procedure, typically completed within 15 to 30 minutes. Before the surgery, numbing eye drops are applied to ensure comfort, and patients remain awake throughout the process. Patients may feel slight pressure during the procedure, but pain is minimal. Once complete, a temporary contact lens is placed over the eye for protection and healing.
PRK Recovery Time
The initial recovery period after PRK takes about one week, during which the cornea’s epithelial layer heals. During this time, some patients experience mild discomfort, light sensitivity, or blurry vision as the eye recovers. The full visual outcome, however, may take several weeks as the vision gradually stabilizes. Your dedicated Ophthalmologist will provide specific aftercare instructions to promote optimal healing and reduce recovery time.
